A community-based sample of 685 women, aged 45–59 years (mean 51 years) living in East Turkey, was recruited in this recently published, cross-sectional study by Timur and Sahin [1]. An information form that included questions on descriptive characteristics and lifestyle variables of cases, the Menopause-Specific Quality of Life Questionnaire, and the Beck Depression Inventory were administered to each woman in the sample. The data were collected through a personal interview with each woman at her home. The prevalence of depression symptoms among the perimenopausal and postmenopausal women was 41.8%. Of all the women, 23.2% were premenopausal and 56.9% were postmenopausal. Logistic regression analysis revealed that the development of depression symptoms was 1.8 times higher in the perimenopausal–postmenopausal period than in the premenopausal period, 3.6 times higher among those with an event history affecting life in a negative way, and 2.0 times higher among those with a body mass index of 25 kg/m[+]2[/+] or higher.
