International Menopause Society announces new research bursary for young researchers

The International Menopause Society (IMS) is keen to encourage young researchers in the field of menopause, adult women’s health and basic science of hormone action by providing a bursary of up to $20,000 per annum for two years for investigative work in these speciality areas of medical research. Dr David Sturdee, chairman of the bursary subcommittee and under whose IMS presidency the award was initiated, said... 'I was very fortunate to have the opportunity of two years of funded research during my gynaecological training, which gave my whole career an added impetus. Funds for research are less available now, so IMS wishes to give such an opportunity to the new generation of young and keen investigators, and to encourage much needed research in the field of menopausal and adult women’s health.'

This prestigious award will be given by the IMS Executive Board following open competition from medically qualified applicants aged under 40 years, who must submit a detailed plan of the research project and budget.

Preference will be given to applicants from countries where opportunities for research and funding are limited. A subcommittee of the IMS Board will consider the applications and will make proposals of awards and the amount for the Board to approve. The project must be supported and supervised by a member of IMS and the successful applicant will be required to give a brief update on the progress of the project after twelve months, if the project isn’t complete. All final research findings should be presented at the next IMS World Congress in Cancun, Mexico in May 2014, for which attendance by researchers will be subject to a separate grant for travel and accommodation.  Any publication resulting from the research should be submitted initially to the IMS journal Climacteric.
