Update on bone health: the IMS White Paper

Osteoporosis and associated fractures present a major challenge in improving global health outcomes. Key clinical aspects are the definition of osteoporosis and associated fractures, fracture risk prediction, stratification of risk of fracture, intervention thresholds and the most appropriate intervention based on integration of aforementioned. Correct understanding and application of these concepts are essential to stem the increasing tide of fragility fractures associated with an aging population. The role of muscle strength and function, sarcopenia, and the newly emerging concept of osteosarcopenia in maintaining bone health are discussed in detail.

The International Menopause Society has commissioned two experts at the forefront of their specialty to define the state of the art in the understanding of this condition, to advise on practical management strategies and to propose future research strategies.

Translations of the White Paper are available free of charge to download below.

The Asia Pacific Menopause Federation held its 8th Scientific Meeting in Hangzhou, China on 15th to 17th November 2021 (see full report here).

Part of the Meeting was focused on the WMD Theme of “Bone Health” as detailed below: –

Professor YU Qi gave the seminar on the theme of Management of Perimenopausal Osteoporosis during the conference saying ‘In the field of menopause, the correlation between osteoporosis and menopause is not controversial. Through good menopause management, including various treatments and menopausal hormone therapy, all treatment measures are effective which is 100% certain. In early menopause, patients often have some bone symptoms, including bone pain, muscle and joint pain and so on. Do these problems mean that there is osteoporosis? Osteoporosis is silent and changes are invisible. In the early stage of menopause, it is not to the extent of osteoporosis in theory, but the patients does have a chief complaints. How to predict osteoporosis and bone turnover earlier through some indicators was the discussion content of the seminar.‘”
