17th WORLD CONGRESS POSTPONED TO 4-7 FEBRUARY 2021

Following the extraordinary circumstances related to the coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak and after thorough evaluation of the emergency situation globally, it’s with great regret that we must postpone the 17th World Congress on the Menopause. The Congress will now be held at the same venue, the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, from Thursday 4th February through to Sunday 7th February 2021 (the pre-congress course to be held 3rd February 2021).

This is not a decision taken lightly, but the health and safety of our delegates, partners and staff are our prime consideration and have to be prioritised over all else.

Of note, we are transposing the entire program to the new dates such that the congress will be the same as that planned to have been held in Melbourne from 30 April to 3 May 2020.All registrations will remain valid for the new dates.

We thank all our participants, sponsors and partners for understanding the need to take these steps and we very positively look forward to seeing you in Melbourne in February 2021 and together sharing a very successful congress. Please visit https://www.imsmelbourne2020.com/postponement-faq/ for more details.

Announcing
a new social media initiative: the IMS now has a LinkedIn page
The Society has recognized the need to be able to communicate at all levels and in recent months has raised our profile on social media. This involves much more activity on Twitter and Facebook pages and the latest initiative is on LinkedIn. This provides us with the opportunity to engage with more followers among the LinkedIn’s global community of health professionals and creates another platform to showcase news about the Society and the services we provide. The Society is keen to make this an avenue for the global medical community dedicated to midlife women’s health to communicate with the IMS and to create a band of followers. It is very simple to create your own LinkedIn personal profile and join in by following these three simple actions:

Click on https://www.linkedin.com/company/internationalmenopausesociety

Then click on the IMS Follow button, on the left-hand side – when members click the Follow button, company updates will appear on followers LinkedIn feed and on the Society page.

Share the page’s updates – whenever you share, comment or like a page content via the status bar feature, not only is that content shared in your Home news feeds, it is then shared in the news feeds of your connections also.

Add the IMS page to your current Experience section – you can update your current Experience section, on your personal LinkedIn profile, to include the IMS by clicking on the IMS logo; this allows a profile viewer to move seamlessly from your personal profile to our company page.

We ask all members to give it a try if they are not already using LinkedIn and see what the possibilities are to participate in the global debate around midlife health.

As was the case in the previous events, it was a joint project with a national organization, this time the Serbian Menopause Society and Prof. Svetlana Vujovic. The format of the conference included a half day pre-congress course, and 2 days for the main program. All board members gave presentations, which were mainly based on case histories. Local experts participated in the program as well, and some of the lectures were in Serbian. 350 people were registered to the conference, including local and international attendees. There was also a small, but nice exhibition area. The social events were remarkable and highlighted by very good live music and dancing. The “9th Congress on Menopausal, Gynecological and Endocrinological Issues” organised by the Beijing Obstetrics & Gynecology Hospital at Capital Medical University was held from the 9th – 10th September 2017. There was a pre-congress workshop on Endometriosis on the 8th September and a post-congress workshop on Outpatient Hysteroscopy from the 11th – 12th September.

The University Hospital in Beijing is the largest, specialised women’s hospital in China and the first official Menopause Clinic Centre for China was founded there in 2011.

Xiangyan Ruan and Alfred O. Mueck organised and chaired the congress with tremendous support from their medical students.

There was a large session organised by the IMS with President, Mary Ann Lumsden, Past President, Rod Baber who is now Editor in Chief of the IMS Journal, Climacteric and Nick Panay (former editor of Climacteric and now head of the scientific committee for the 16th World Congress on Menopause in Vancouver in 2018) all giving lectures along with other IMS members – Yu Qi, President of the Chinese Menopause Society, Andrea Genazzani, Tomi Mikkola, Xiangyan Ruan and Alfred Mueck.

Menopause topics covered during the congress included the new IMS guidelines for HRT, perimenopausal bleeding disorders, use of androgens in HRT, premature menopause, large Finnish register studies on cardiovascular morbidity and vascular dementia during use of HRT and new mechanisms of breast cancer development.

All national and international speakers and guests enjoyed the warm welcome and the very special social and cultural atmosphere in Beijing, China.

Rod Baber commented, “The meeting also included a number of interesting presentations on abnormal uterine bleeding, PCOS, Endometriosis, TCM, Office Hysteroscopy and Ovarian tissue cryopreservation and reimplantation. Over 100 cryopreservation procedures have now been performed by Capital Medical University Staff and a highlight of this meeting was to know that the first 4 successful tissue reimplantations have been performed by Prof Ruans team, the first in China. These meetings continue to attract strong delegate numbers always including key opinion leaders from China and beyond. The organisation was a credit to Professors Ruan and Mueck but also to their students whose attention to detail, care and enthusiasm was outstanding.”

Nick Panay said, “From both personal and IMS perspectives, I believe we should try to achieve close collaboration with the Beijing Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Capital Medical University to facilitate research and educational opportunities.

Research: The POI registry has been translated into Chinese and 250 patients have already been entered. Our thanks to Prof Xiangyan Ruan, Prof Alfred Mueck and the students for facilitating this. The registry should yield important etiological, epidemiological and clinical data which will allow us to compare and contrast regional variations in presentation and outcomes. The intention is to take the research further; we are planning collaborative, prospective randomised trials looking at both conventional and Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Educational – Closer educational links could facilitate:

  • Further collaborative postgraduate meetings in China (with possibly an IMS regional meeting in the future in Beijing)
  • Increased Chinese delegate (at all levels of seniority) attendance and abstract submission at our World Congresses,
  • Student / postgrad exchanges between Beijing/China and other countries
  • Further translations of abstracts and papers from Climacteric in to Chinese”

A new statement, endorsed by IMS, reviews the ‘Management of Aromatase Inhibitor-Associated Bone Loss (AIBL) in postmenopausal women with hormone sensitive breast cancer’

A new position paper has published online in the Journal of Bone Oncology and endorsed by IMS and other International Societies including IOF, CABS, ECTS, ESCEO, IEG, IMS and SIGO JBO. This provides an updated algorithm to better assess fracture risk and direct treatment in the management of AI-associated bone loss (AIBL).

Mary Ann Lumsden, President of IMS comments “Decreased bone density and fracture are a major issue for women taking aromatase inhibitors for treatment of breast cancer. Risk of fracture increases substantially and this will only get worse as the women age. This document highlights the importance of bone loss and suggests practical measures for treatment that are endorsed by several societies interested in diseases of bone from around the world. Hopefully, this means that in the future, this problem will not be neglected and women will be monitored for bone loss and receive appropriate treatment at the right time.”

New Year Address from Mary Ann Lumsden, IMS President

2017 is going to be a very exciting year for the Society and I hope every member will work with me and the IMS Board of Trustees so that we can achieve our aims for the coming year.

The World Congress in Vancouver in June 2018 is on the topic of ‘Midlife health in the 21st Century, a lifestyle approach’ and will be focused on the younger menopausal woman. It will be aimed particularly at those who are perimenopausal or have premature ovarian insufficiency. Perimenopause will be a major priority for the Society this year and will also be the topic of World Menopause Day in the autumn. We are in the process of developing an excellent scientific program for Vancouver and the meeting will provide a fantastic opportunity to learn from experts around the world and to share cutting-edge research and developments in the menopause world. The success of any congress is only achieved by collaborative working, and I hope every member will think about how they can help: whether it is attending the meeting, promoting it to your colleagues and contacts, or submitting an Abstract in order to share your expertise and experience with others.

The care of women in midlife is the reason why this Society is in existence, but not all health professionals have the opportunity of being able to offer the specialized advice needed to help such women who they see in their clinics. I will be visiting Colombia, Singapore, India and China on behalf of the IMS to share knowledge and expertise, and many other Board members are also attending meetings around the world, so we look forward to seeing you in your own country and sharing knowledge and expertise that I hope you will find useful in helping improve the quality of life of your patients.

Finally, I hope you will benefit from the development of the IMS educational arm and join in the new initiatives which will cover all aspects of healthy aging and prevention of disease. Professor Duru Shah from Mumbai has all sorts of innovative ideas to develop the Digital Education strategy and Amos Pines will continue to help organize the local meetings and produce Menopause Live so that every member can increase their knowledge and help to improve midlife women’s health around the world. Keep an eye on our website for further information as the year progresses.

Any Society is only as good as its members, and we welcome your contribution to the work of the Society and your help to achieve our aims for the New Year. I would be delighted to hear from any member, new or old, on how we can help you in your own practice in order that all women can lead full and active lives for as long as they wish.

The IMS launches patient information videos on YouTube – a new practical guide to managing the menopause

The IMS is pleased to announce a series of seven short, easy-to-understand videos, which will be launched on YouTube on 5th January 2015, to specifically help women access simple, relevant and credible information about the menopause and counteract the misleading information often found on social media sites. The videos cover a whole range of issues surrounding the menopause, including the issues women worry most about: weight gain, treatment safety, and sex after the menopause.

Rod Baber, President of the IMS, who is one of the presenters, commented: “The internet is a great source of information, but it is also a great source of misinformation, particularly where health is concerned. The IMS is the most authoritative global body dealing with the menopause, so we have a responsibility to make sure that good, reliable information is available to women going through the menopause.”

The information is also presented by IMS Board members, Susan Davis and Anna Fenton. The videos are short, running from 4 to 13 minutes and each one covers a specific menopausal subject in bite-sized form, so they can be viewed separately to address specific issues, or together as a good educational package.

All these videos will be available to the public free of charge and can be viewed or downloaded by: clicking here. The series comprises the following films:

  1. What are the symptoms?
  2. How will it affect my health?
  3. What is Menopausal Hormone Therapy (HRT)?
  4. Is Menopausal Hormone Therapy (HRT) safe?
  5. Complementary therapies
  6. Treatment options
  7. Will it affect my sex life?

All feedback from members will be gratefully received and, if this is successful, we would welcome any suggestions for further topics to be addressed using the video format.
