David F. Archer, MD, is Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and a Clinical Investigator with the CONRAD Clinical Research Center in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia, USA.
He received a BA in Zoology in 1956 from the University of Louisville and his MD from the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1960. He completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Louisville General Hospital in 1966. He served as a General Medical Officer 1961 -1963 in the U.S. Army.
Dr. Archer was a National Institute of Health (NIH) postdoctoral fellow in Reproductive Endocrinology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine under the direction of Luigi Mastroianni, MD (1966-1968). He was a special NIH postdoctoral fellow under the direction of Professor Egon Diczfalusy in the Hormonlaboratoriet of the Karolinska Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden (1968 -1970). During his fellowships, he investigated steroid hormone metabolism in the foeto-placental unit.
Dr. Archer joined the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 1970, where was Director of the Division of Reproductive Medicine and later the Director of the In Vitro Fertilization program in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He joined the faculty of the Eastern Virginia Medical School in 1986 as the Director of Clinical Research for the Contraceptive Research and Development Program (CONRAD), a position that he held until 2017. He served as Director of the Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Fellowship Program at Eastern Virginia Medical School from 2000 to 2015, and Director of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program from 2009- 2012.
Dr. Archer has authored or co-authored 274 articles in the fields of menopause, contraception, and reproductive endocrinology. He is on the Editorial Board of Contraception, Menopause, and Steroids, while serving as an Ad Hoc reviewer for Fertility and Sterility, Human Reproduction, the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Biology of Reproduction, Maturitas, Climacteric, JCEM, Southern Medical Journal and the Journal of Women’s Health.
Dr. Archer has contributed to the International Menopause Society by serving two terms as a member of the Board of Directors from 2011 to 2017 and Treasurer from 2014 to 2017. He was the Program Co-Chair for the Scientific Meeting in Cancun, Mexico in 2016. He was elected CAMS Treasurer in 2016.
Dr. Archer is a member of the North American Menopause Society and was elected to the Board of Trustees (1994), serving as the Society’s Treasurer, Chair of the Scientific Committee for the 1997 Annual Meeting, and elected President of the Society for 1997-1998.
Dr. Archer served for eight years, as Secretary of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) and was a Member of the Board of Directors for three years. He has been president of the Society of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (SREI) and Chair of both the Contraceptive Special Interest and the Menopause Special Interest Groups for ASRM.
Dr. Archer is a member of the Board of the Egon and Ann Diczfalusy Foundation based in Szeged, Hungary.
